“It was fantastic to experience Keep the Cash! The skills the students acquired are invaluable for lifelong learning.”
Vicki Mee, Achievement Mentor, University Academy Birkenhead, Wirral
The Benefits to Schools
Although personal finance education is a National Curriculum requirement, there is a lack of independent and educationally-sound tools to help teachers deliver this.
Keep the Cash! addresses the needs of the National Curriculum and goes much further, engaging with students of all abilities at Key Stage 4 and 5. It is a programme of activity that will receive universal support from parents, governors and the students themselves.
Keep the Cash!:
- engages students in real-world decision-making
- meets the requirements of the National Curriculum
- focuses on PHSEE, functional mathematics and English
- is practical and hands-on
“Keep the Cash! is the most effective financial literacy product currently available to education providers”
Dr Diane Lloyd, The Centre for Secondary and Vocational Education, Liverpool John Moores University
During the simulation, students are put through a rigorous and stimulating process during which they:
- Evaluate their personal aspirations and demonstrate the ability to build a sustainable lifestyle which they can fund
- Set up a house, working as a team to agree on important communal matters
- Negotiate with the bank to manage their finances using different sources of credit
- Use functional English in a range of tasks including preparing their personal CVs and undergoing job interviews
- Use functional Maths in a range of tasks including forecasting cash flow and calculating interest payments
- Develop core techniques required to manage their lifelong relationship with finance
The Benefits to Students
This generation of students face some major challenges and at the heart of them is the task of building self-sustaining and independent adult lives.
Whatever they choose, it is imperative that they have the skills and knowledge to manage their lifelong relationship with finance. This means much more than making individual financial choices (which are entirely personal matters). They need to be equipped with a practical tool kit of skills and knowledge which they can use to manage their lives successfully and sustainably.
Keep the Cash!:
- provides students with the tools to have a lifelong relationship with finance
- introduces them to what it will be like to live as independent adults
- encourages them to match their aspirations with their ability to fund that lifestyle, enabling them to build a sustainable plan for their future
“Keep the Cash! provides fantastic skills development. Within the session you can see pupils developing and they really do pick up a lot of skills – interview skills, communication and, of course, mathematics.”
